Lot description:
Roman Provincial

SYRIA, Uncertain. Marcus Aurelius. As Caesar, AD 139-161. Æ 24mm (6.86 g, 6h). Α ς Κ Μ ΑςΠΗ Ος[ΗΠΟΧ] ΚΑΙΧΑΠ , bare-headed, draped bust right / ΑςΤ Κ ΑΙΛ ΑΔPI ANTWNINOC SEB EVCEB, Antoninus Pius on horseback left, raising hand. BMC -; SNG Copenhagen -. VF, green patina with earthen encrustation.

Similar to the piece offered in E-auction 163, lot 186, with a slight variation on the legends. There is no indication of a city name on this coin, just the names and titles of Aurelius and his adoptive father Antoninus Pius. Certain issues in their names have been attributed to Cyprus, which is a possibility with this coin. The hard reddish earthen encrustation is typical of the Syrian region, so a mint site on the mainland is also a high probability.

Estimate: $100
